East Kettering

Strategic Urban Extension (SUE) Phase 1 Access Roads Project

The East Kettering Strategic Urban Extension (SUE) Phase 1 Access Roads Project, on the Eastern edge of Kettering Town Northamptonshire, is the initial stage in unlocking over 328.5 hectares of agricultural land for a proposed mix use development. Whitemountain were appointed by Hanwood Park LLP under a JCT 2011 Design and Construct Contract to deliver the project.

The key project deliverables consisted of the following:

Extensive site clearance across 18.15 hectares of land which included the demolition of an existing bungalow located at 101 Barton Road.
Site-wide earthworks operations which involved the bulk excavation of 90,000m3 of subsoil. The selected excavated material was tested for suitability as structural fill, the material was stockpiled and reused within the site boundary thus reducing the requirement to dispose of material off-site, which consequently reduced the volume of imported fill.
Construction of new strategic infrastructure roads/junctions including earthworks, capping layer, sub-base, kerb beam,
Permanent and temporary kerbs, road drainage, gullies, gully connections, ducting and asphalt surfacing. The newly constructed infrastructure included:

2.4km of new single carriageway to Northampton County Council Section 38 adoptable standard.
The construction of a new 45m diameter Section 278 roundabout providing access to the development from  Junction 10 of the A14, Kettering Town and Barton Seagrave.
Section 278 works on the Barton Road which involved the construction of a signalised junction and providing a site entrance to the “Access Road E”.
The reconfiguration of the Section 278 Cranford Road junction which necessitated a change in priority, from Cranford Village/Barton Road to the newly constructed Access F and Access F Infill roads.

Associated section 185, 104 and 98 drainage provisions.
