Ballymartin Park And Ride Facility

Bus Park and Ride facility at Ballymartin, Templepatrick,

This project was procured under an NEC3 Option B Form of contract with design and project management undertaken by Taylor and Boyd Consulting Engineers. It was completed in accordance with the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works for final adoption by Dept for Infrastructure (Northern Ireland). The project involved the construction of a new 430 space car park, 300m link road, bus lanes attenuation and retention ponds, a new 58m dia roundabout on the A57 trunk road and alterations to the M2 motorway on/off slips.

The key project elements consisted of the following:

30,000m3 of bulk excavation of which 8,000m3 was placed on site as noise reduction berms, 12,000m3 was placed on the car park site to achieve desired formation level for the soil stabilisation process and 10,000m3 (A57 trunk road excavation) was removed to the Whitemountain inert landfill site in Belfast.
Soil stabilisation using both lime and cement stabilisation processes to the carpark footprint to achieve the desired formation stability. This was a contractor value engineering proposal which reduced the offsite disposal and onsite virgin aggregate importation volumes by 12,000m3.
Construction of 31,000m2 of new asphalt roads and car parking. Installation of road signs, road and car park markings and road studs.
New roundabout, internal dia.40m and external dia. 58m was constructed on the existing dual carriageway on the A57 between Templepatrick and Ballyclare and the junction of the M2 motorway on/off slips.
Installation of 3,100m of storm water drainage lines discharging into 2nr geosynthetic clay lined retention ponds with outlet flow control devices installed to restrict the rate of discharge to the adjacent river.

The junction of the A57 and the M2 off/on slips have a very high traffic flow in excess of 25,000 AADT. The traffic management was delivered in-house and led by our site based Traffic Safety and Control Officer. The traffic management arrangements were particularly complex on this project as there were eight major changeovers required to complete the highway works. The A57 is a major trunk road leading to Larne port which carries significant HGV vehicles, with no traffic restrictions permitted in the Works Information.
