We recognise that climate change is one of the greatest challenges currently facing humanity and we are committed to achieving net zero by 2050.
Breedon formally submitted its commitment letter to the SBTi in July 2022, which was accepted. We will develop near-term targets following the SBTi Net Zero Standard and the 1.5°C pathway and will submit these to SBTi for validation in due course.
Of our Group-wide carbon emissions, the principal contributor of CO2 is our cement business.
The most significant proportion of CO2 originates from process emissions, which by its chemical nature, is difficult to decarbonise.
We have already made great improvements at our Hope cement plant, having effectively reduced emissions by 1/3 for each tonne of cementitious product since their 1990 baseline.
Our 2030 target is to achieve a 30% reduction in the gross carbon intensity per tonne of cementitious product and we will achieve this by:
Beyond 2030, we will focus on further fuel switching, particularly on biomass fuels as these present the possibility of enabling the business to go beyond net zero.
Other potential routes to decarbonisation include hydrogen, electrification and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), but these technologies and national infrastructures still need to be developed at scale for our sector to use.
One of our largest Scope 3 emissions relates to the distribution of our products.
Understanding this, we have set out a roadmap focused on decarbonising our distribution activities, including replacement of aging fleet with the latest Euro VI engines and commencing trials of zero carbon fleet in the coming months.
